In 2005, Queensland optometrists were granted the right to prescribe a range of medications to treat eye conditions. To access this, optometrists are required to complete a post graduate course of pharmacology and disease processes.

Somerville & Merrin and our partner practice Kent Neilson have optometrists who can use and prescribe antibiotic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory drops as well as medications for allergic symptoms.

The benefit to you is that you will no longer have to see both your optometrist and your doctor to have your eye conditions treated. Some optometrists prescriptions are also covered by the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme, and so are subsidised by the federal government.
